Zellige
Zellige is an element of the Moroccan architecture which appeared since the XII th century, it is a technique which makes it possible to manufacture geometrical mosaics by assembling pieces of ceramics which will be then bound by cement.
The zellige is a material made containing clay coming from the town of Fès mixed with water. This mixture enables us to obtain a homogeneous and malleable paste which is then run in wooden moulds that we let dry several hours under the sun.
The obtained tiles are then enamelled and passed in the furnace, they are then soaked in the color and dry face against face before to pass to the furnace a second time to fix the color. In the furnace of a temperature of 900°, the tiles are laid out on several stages according to the color; blue, white and beige are positioned in the bottom, the yellow and green in the medium and the red in top of the furnace.
These tiles are then cut to obtain various designs of various forms and sizes. This operation occurs in three stages; the drawing of the designs on the ceramics tiles, the cutting using a sharpened hammer and finally smoothing and beveling to facilitate the installation.
The realization of the mosaic is done on an iron framework deposited on a flat ground starting from a drawing which is carried out from the back, therefore the shapes of ceramics are in general associated with a color what makes it possible to locate them and to differentiate them. Once the installation finished cement is cast on the zellige in which will be fixed iron bars to solidify the unit.
The zellige, artisanal material and entirely handbook knew to adapt to the contemporary styles of decorations while preserving an artisanal manufacturing process. The richness of its forms and the beauty of its colors make zellige a decorative piece privileged to equip the mosques, the hammams, the fountains, the kitchens and the basins as well as the bathrooms, the spas, the swimming pools and the terraces. Naturalness or enamelled, it is appropriate as well for the grounds as for the interior or external walls.
